Overview

We have created this fully online program to support those of you who can’t travel or cannot attend in-person Teacher Training for other reasons but would still like to enhance your knowledge and become more confident in your teaching.

The program consists of recorded materials and live Zoom sessions with your mentor. It is perfect for those who prefer to study at their own pace and time and enjoy the benefits of personalised, one-on-one mentoring. Apart from your mentor, you will get written feedback for your module assignments from the module teacher. You can sign up for the training anytime - this is an on-demand format. To apply, you need to be a 200-hour certified Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance registered school. A minimum of one year and a maximum of three is required to finish the training. Spanda Institute is a Yoga Alliance registered Teacher Training School. When you complete this program, you can register as RYT 500.

This training is divided into nine modules:

If you have done your 200-hour training with us, you won’t need to repeat modules you have already done. Please email us for details on the extended program for Spanda graduates.

Requirements

To join this training, you will need to already be a certified Yoga Teacher with a diploma from a Yoga Alliance registered school.

Other than that, you will need a yoga mat, two blocks, yoga bolster (or a folded thicker blanket), a laptop and a good WiFi connection, and some students to practice your skills on;). If you need to buy any of the equipment, you can get them at 15% off from our partner Yogaline Shop (code is NINA15, discount is valid for sale items as well).

What can you expect?

At the end of this training, you will acquire many skills and tools applicable to your own Yoga practise and the classes you teach. We call this training The Alchemy of Transformation, and our goal is for you to learn the skills to heal and transform your body/mind with your Yoga practice and use those skills to help others do the same. You will get all the tools you need to advance your Yoga career, skillfully create masterclasses and workshops, organise retreats, and learn how to promote yourself and what you teach.

Even though you will learn at your own pace and time, apart from always having someone available to answer your questions, we will be there for you every step of the way. Each module will have a quiz and homework, either an essay or a practice video, and you will get detailed feedback.

Modules in detail

Yoga History and Tradition
Even though Yoag History is usually covered in 200-hour YTTs, with this course, we offer a more extensive Yoga History and Tradition module. We teach in a non-dogmatic way, aligned with the latest findings and scholarly consensus. This module also covers modern Yoga history, discussing how postural Yoga has spread worldwide.

Anatomy, Physiology and Biomechanics
Understanding human anatomy and physiology is an important tool for Yoga Teachers who want to teach yogic techniques such as asana, pranayama, mantra and mudra with intention and understanding. In this module, we cover the skeletal system and the biomechanics of asana (joint positions), the muscular system, the nervous system, and the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory system. Finally, we offer a lecture about common injuries and how to deal with them.

Spanda Method - intelligent sequencing
Spanda Method is one of our core modules covering the primary Vinyasa Flow sequencing method we teach and from which most other sequencing methods originate. This intelligent method has clearly laid out principles and an intuitive, organic structure based on anatomy and physiology, but it also has a lot of room for creativity. Our students come from different paths and have studied various ways of sequencing asana classes - some have studied set sequences, and some a more creative approach. Regardless of what you have learned thus far, we believe this will be a helpful tool for intelligent sequencing of intermediate Vinyasa-style classes.

Beyond Asana
Beyond Asana module covers other essential tools such as pranayama, meditation, mindfulness, mudra and mantra, and how to use them in your asana classes or as a separate practice.

Spanda Tattva Flow
In this module, you will learn about Ayurveda, Pancha Maha Bhutas, or the Five Great Elements, and how to use Ayurveda's principles to sequence balancing and healing classes. We look at how to use the elements and the qualities of each element to sequence: Bhumi (earth) Flow, Jala (water) Flow, Agni (fire) Flow, and Vayu (air) Flow. You will learn different Namaskars for each element as well as mudras, pranayama and mantra for each element.

Spanda Chakra Flow
We use Chakras as inspiration to teach you our Advanced sequencing method(s), which build and prepare toward a peak asana or asanas. In this module, we cover the mandala sequencing method in which we move in circles around the mat, as well as another advanced sequencing method. This module also dives deeper into the subtle body using tools such as mantra, mudra, meditation and pranayama to stimulate different qualities and energy.

Trauma-Sensitive Yoga
In this module we explore why some practices can create dysregulation for people who’ve experienced trauma and ways you can prevent this. You will learn how to recognise traumatic stress symptoms or other dysregulation. We will also discuss current empirical research, including evidence-based interventions you can apply immediately to your work, so you are well-equipped with tools and modifications to help you work skillfully with dysregulated arousal, traumatic flashbacks, and trauma-related dissociation. This module includes the methodology of Restorative Yoga classes as well as Trauma-Sensitive Yoga Nidra.

Prenatal Essentials
This course is an introduction to teaching Prenatal Yoga. It covers the Anatomy and Physiology of pregnancy and how to sequence a basic Prenatal Yoga class. For those of you who want to learn more, we also offer a full 85-hour Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training course.

Tools For Growth - The Business of Teaching Yoga
All our courses at Spanda Institute are created to help you become a more knowledgeable, competent, mindful, and compassionate Yoga Teacher, qualities that will always be essential for teaching Yoga. However, they are often not enough. You will need other tools if you want to reach out to more people who might benefit from everything you know and build a thriving career doing what you love. We hope this module will help you bridge that gap, grow as a Yoga Teacher, and become not only great but also successful in what you do. This course is divided into eight topics - rules and regulations, ethical guidelines, how to set and reach your goals, how to become a great Yoga Teacher, how to create your brand, teaching one-to-one, organising retreats and teaching workshops plus bonus materials including a lecture ‘how to do research’.

After completing her 200-hour training with us in Portugal and graduating with honours as one of the best in her class, Teresa joined us as an Anatomy Teacher first while continuing her Yoga education, sound healing education, as well as pursuing professional education in manual therapy. Bruno Morias

E-RYT 500, YACEP
Spanda Method, Mentor

Movement has always been essential to Bruno's life; he studied dance in Amsterdam and performed for years in theatres around Europe. During this time, he practised Yoga, mainly as a warm-up during his years as a dancer, but also because he found a more profound connection with himself on the mat, so completing a Yoga Teacher Training was a natural next step in his life.
While at the crossroads of his professional life, Bruno took some time off to travel the globe, teaching Yoga everywhere he stayed longer. He also continued with his Yoga education, completing a 300-hour training with Nina Vukas and Celest Pereira, and soon joined our team, first as a mentor, followed by an assistant teacher, and later taking the lead on our 200-hour YTT courses in Portugal and Sri Lanka.
Bruno is a fun and down-to-earth teacher; his students mainly describe him as humble and patient. When he is not leading one of our 200-hour YTTs, Bruno is teaching weekly classes in different Yoga studios in and around Lisbon.
